Los Angeles Angels outfielder Josh Hamilton will be sidelined for six to eight weeks because of a torn ligament in his left thumb that needs surgery.
The 2010 AL MVP Hamilton was injured in Tuesday night’s game against Seattle during a headfirst slide into first base.
The Angels said an MRI on Wednesday revealed a complete tear of the thumb’s ulnar collateral ligament, and hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steven Shin will operate.
The Angels placed Hamilton on the 15-day disabled list, and recalled outfielder J.B. Shuck from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia didn’t seem to have a problem with Hamilton sliding headfirst.
“It’s part of his instinct to get to a base,” Scioscia said. “Sometimes you just react to a situation. It’s just competitive nature, and Josh plays hard.”
A five-time All-Star, Hamilton has struggled since signing a $125 million, five-year contract with the Angels before the 2013 season.
INJURED IN GAME — Chicago White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia left in the sixth inning of Wednesday’s game against Colorado after injuring his left shoulder.
Garcia made an unsuccessful attempt for a diving catch on D.J. LeMahieu’s drive to right with two outs. After appearing to first catch the ball, Garcia lost it when he hit the ground.
Garcia remained on the ground for several minutes, then left the field on his own power. There was no immediate detail on his injury.
YANKEES MAKE MOVES — The New York Yankees optioned catcher Austin Romine to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and recalled reliever Shane Greene to help bolster a bullpen missing closer David Roberston.
Greene, 25, has never pitched above Double-A Trenton but was impressive during spring training, showing a 95 mph fastball. He was on Scranton’s roster but hadn’t pitched yet this season.
