MLB notebook: Concussion benches Nationals outfielder

Associated Press

The Washington Nationals placed outfielder Denard Span on the seven-day disabled list with a concussion on Saturday.

Span was hurt in a collision with Atlanta Braves second baseman Dan Uggla in the eighth inning Friday night.

Span initially was stunned by the collision but he remained in the game after being checked on the field. Nationals manager Matt Williams said Span reported a mild headache after the game and had “mild symptoms” on Saturday.

Span had a serious concussion with the Twins in 2010, when he missed almost two months. “Given his history, we thought it was certainly erring on the side of caution to go ahead and get him on the seven-day DL,” Williams said.

Span may be examined again today to determine if he will accompany the team to Miami for a three-game road trip or return to Washington.

Right fielder Jayson Werth was also kept out of Saturday’s lineup due to cramping in his groin.

Washington recalled outfielder Steven Souza Jr. from Triple-A Syracuse. The team also selected right-hander Blake Treinen and optioned right-hander Blake Barrett to Syracuse.

JOINING RANGERS — The Texas Rangers acquired right-hander Hector Noesi from the Seattle Mariners for a player to be named or cash. Noesi has a 4-16 career record with a 5.64 ERA in 66 games (21 starts) for the New York Yankees (2011) and Seattle (2012-14).

Texas also transferred second baseman Jurickson Profar (torn muscle in right shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list to 60-day DL on Saturday to make room on the 40-man roster.
