The Tampa Bay Rays put right-hander Alex Cobb on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a strained oblique in his left side, the second starter they’ve lost to injury in a week.
Cobb pitched seven innings in a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday. He’s gone 15⅓ innings without allowing a run.
The Rays called up left-handed reliever Jeff Beliveau from Triple-A Durham to take his spot on the roster.
Beliveau pitched 22 games in relief for the Cubs in 2012 and one for the Rays last season. He threw one perfect inning during a 12-4 loss to the Reds and was sent back to the minors. The Rays plan to call up another reliever today.
Left-hander Erik Bedard was added to the roster on Sunday and will take Cobb’s spot in the rotation for now.
Left-hander Matt Moore went on the 15-day DL earlier in the week with a sore elbow. The Rays moved left-hander Cesar Ramos from the bullpen into the rotation to take his place.
BELTRE PLACED ON DL — Adrian Beltre is getting some extra time to recover from a strained left quad after the Texas Rangers put their third baseman on the 15-day disabled list.
The move came just before the series finale against Houston, when newly acquired right-hander Hector Noesi was added to the Rangers roster.
Beltre hasn’t played since coming out of Tuesday’s game at Boston. His DL move is retroactive to Wednesday, and he could be eligible to come off the DL as early as April 24, a day off for Texas.
General Manager Jon Daniels had said this weekend that the team was going to be cautious with the 35-year-old Beltre to make sure the quad didn’t become a lingering problem. Beltre has dealt with several leg issues during his four seasons with the Rangers, though he has proven his ability to keep playing despite them.
WHITE SOX OUTFIELDER DONE FOR SEASON — White Sox manager Robin Ventura says outfielder Avisail Garcia will have season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday.
Ventura confirmed the day of the operation before Sunday’s game against the Indians. The White Sox had already announced that Garcia would have season-ending surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
He was injured trying to make a diving catch Wednesday at Colorado, a big blow for a team trying to rebound from a 99-loss season. Garcia has batted .298 since being acquired from Detroit last summer in the three-team trade that sent Jake Peavy to Boston.
NATS’ ZIMMERMAN OUT — The Washington Nationals placed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list with a broken right thumb.
Infielder Zach Walters was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to take Zimmerman’s spot on the 25-man roster.
Zimmerman, who’s expected to miss four to six weeks, was injured in the fifth inning Saturday while diving back to second base and getting picked off.
General Manager Mike Rizzo said Zimmerman will see a hand specialist at the Cleveland Clinic today.
