Saturday’s American League results

Blue Jays 4, Royals 2 — Brett Lawrie drove in the tie-breaking run with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning, and the host Toronto Blue Jays rallied to beat the Kansas City Royals. Toronto batted around while scoring three unearned runs in the eighth against four relievers.

Yankees 2, Orioles 0 — Ivan Nova threw a three-hitter for his first career shutout, Robinson Cano had an RBI double in the first and homered in the eighth as the host New York Yankees recorded their second consecutive win over the Orioles. Nova (8-4) outworked Scott Feldman in an efficient 104-pitch outing for his second complete game, helping the Yankees move past their division rival by a half-game in the AL wild-card chase.

Red Sox 7, White Sox 2 — Jake Peavy pitched seven strong innings against his former team, Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits and the host Boston Red Sox recorded their sixth win in the past seven games. Ellsbury also scored twice and drove in a run for the AL East leaders. David Ortiz went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Boston’s 15-hit attack.

Mariners 3, Astros 1 — Joe Saunders pitched neatly into the sixth inning for his first win in a month, and the visiting Seattle Mariners recorded their third consecutive victory. Kendrys Morales, Nick Franklin and Dustin Ackley each drove in a run for the Mariners.

Twins 2, Rangers 1 — Leonys Martin hit a game-winning bases-loaded single with two out in the ninth inning to lift the Texas Rangers to a walk-off victory.

Athletics 2, Rays 1 — Coco Crisp had a solo home run and run-scoring single to lift the host Oakland Athletics. Crisp had three hits, including his 15th homer. Starter Scott Gray shut out the Rays for 6⅔ innings.

Saturday’s National League results

Pirates 7, Cardinals 1 — A.J. Burnett scattered four hits over seven innings, Russell Martin hit a three-run homer and the host Pittsburgh Pirates regained sole possession of the NL Central lead. Neil Walker added three hits for the Pirates. Burnett (7-9) gave up one run while striking out six and walking one. Martin keyed a five-run second with his drive off Lance Lynn (13-9).

Cubs 4, Phillies 3 — Starlin Castro hit a tie-breaking homer in the sixth to lead the host Chicago Cubs. Cole Gillespie drove in two runs with a single and a sacrifice fly as the Cubs earned their fourth win in 20 home games since the All-Star break. Castro drove a 1-0 fastball from Zach Miner (0-1) to the center-field batter’s eye.

Reds 8, Rockies 3 — Brandon Phillips tripled, homered and doubled in his first three at-bats and Greg Reynolds beat his former team for his first major-league win in two years in lifting the visiting Cincinnati Reds.

Braves 5, Marlins 4 — B.J. Upton had four hits, including the game-winning single in the 11th inning, to power the host Atlanta Braves to their fifth win in a row.

Mets 11, Nationals 3 — Zack Wheeler pitched effectively into the seventh inning and the visiting New York Mets piled up a season-high 17 hits. Eric Young Jr., Daniel Murphy, Josh Satin and Juan Lagares had three hits apiece for New York.

Diamondbacks 4, Giants 3 — Eric Chavez hit the first pitch he saw in the ninth for a run-scoring single to send the host Arizona Diamondbacks to another walk-off win.

Dodgers 2, Padres 1 — Pinch-hitter Mark Ellis’ RBI single in the bottom of the eighth snapped a 1-all tie and lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to their third win in a row.

Saturday’s interleague result

Angels 6, Brewers 5 — Hank Conger hit a pinch two-run homer with two out in the top of the ninth inning to rally the Los Angeles Angels. Jonathan Lucroy drove in four runs with three hits for the Brewers.
