Thursday’s American League results

Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1 — Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings, Austin Jackson hit a two-run homer and the visiting Detroit Tigers routed the slumping Toronto Blue Jays. Jackson went 4-for-5 with a walk and scored four times as the Tigers pounded out 16 hits. Torii Hunter had three RBI and Prince Fielder drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers won for the ninth time in 11 meetings with Toronto. Verlander (9-5) allowed three singles.

White Sox 3, Orioles 2 — Adam Dunn hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Tommy Hunter to give the Chicago White Sox a dramatic victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Chicago starter Jose Quintana had a career-high 11 strikeouts.

Yankees 9, Twins 5 — Vernon Wells drove in three runs, and the visiting New York Yankees pounded rookie Kyle Gibson to finish a four-game sweep. Travis Hafner had three hits and scored twice, and Ichiro Suzuki had a two-run triple among his three hits for the Yankees. Justin Morneau homered twice for the Twins.

Rays 7, Astros 5 — Yunel Escobar got three hits and drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning, to lift the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Brett Wallace homered twice for the Astros.

Rangers 5, Mariners 4 — Adrian Beltre homered twice and the host Texas Rangers used a four-run seventh inning to beat the Seattle Mariners. Beltre had three hits.

Thursday’s National League results

Phillies 6, Pirates 4 — Major-league loss leader Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings, Carlos Ruiz hit a tiebreaking single and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies beat Gerrit Cole. Hamels (3-11) gave up one earned run and five hits, striking out eight without a walk. The former World Series MVP won for the first time since June 5.

Nationals 8, Brewers 5 — Wilson Ramos hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the seventh inning in his Fourth of July return to the host Washington Nationals. Back after missing 44 games with a strained left hamstring, Ramos had three hits and a career-high five RBI.

Diamondbacks 5, Mets 4 — Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single with two out in the 15th inning and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, boosted early by Gerardo Parra’s bunt double, finally outlasted the New York Mets.

Marlins 4, Braves 3 — Pinch-hitter Donovan Solano’s run-scoring single off Craig Kimbrel in the top of the ninth drove in the winning run and capped the Florida Marlins’ comeback from a 3-0 first-inning deficit.

Rockies 9, Dodgers 5 — Michael Cuddyer had a two-run double in the third and a solo home run in the seventh to power the host Colorado Rockies. Adrian Gonzalez had four hits, including a solo homer, for the Dodgers.

Thursday’s interleague results

Angels 6, Cardinals 5 — Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer and Erick Aybar added a run-scoring walkoff single as the Los Angeles Angels rallied with three runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Red Sox 8, Padres 2 — Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run double, David Ortiz had a two-run single and the Boston Red Sox wrapped up a big homestand 8-1. Brandon Snyder and Jacoby Ellsbury each had solo homers.

Athletics 1, Cubs 0 — Derek Norris walked with two out and came around to score on a passed ball with two out in the seventh inning and the host Oakland Athletics edged the Chicago Cubs. Dan Straily (5-2) gave up one hit in seven innings.
