Thursday’s American League results
Athletics 3, Yankees 2 — Nate Freiman singled home the winning run in the 18th inning against Mariano Rivera, lifting the host Oakland Athletics to a dramatic victory over the New York Yankees for a three-game sweep. John Jaso singled off Preston Claiborne (0-1) to start the rally. New York made a dramatic play in the bottom of the 15th to keep the game going. Pinch-hitter Coco Crisp singled with one out and Vernon Wells made a perfect throw to catcher Chris Stewart, who blocked the plate and absorbed a collision to prevent Brandon Moss from scoring.
Blue Jays 3, Rangers 1 — Edwin Encarnacion hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning to lift the visiting Toronto Blue Jays. The slumping Rangers wasted another solid outing by Yu Darvish. Neal Cotts (2-1) replaced Darvish to start the eighth, when Emilio Bonifacio reached on a throwing error by Gold Glove third baseman Adrian Beltre. Munenori Kawasaki had a sacrifice bunt before Tanner Scheppers, the second reliever, walked Jose Bautista before the double by Encarnacion. Esmil Rogers (2-2) allowed one run over seven innings.
Royals 10, Rays 1 — Elliot Johnson had a three-run homer for his second hit of an eight-run sixth inning to lead the visiting Kansas City Royals. Johnson led off the big inning with a single and chased Jeremy Hellickson (4-3) with his second homer of the season, both coming against Tampa Bay. Ervin Santana (5-5) gave up five hits and an unearned run in 7⅔ innings.
Orioles 5, Red Sox 4 — Chris Davis singled home the tiebreaking run with two out in the 13th inning to lift the host Baltimore Orioles an exhausting win. Danny Valencia homered for the Orioles, who moved into second place.
Thursday’s National League results
Cardinals 2, Mets 1 — Adam Wainwright became the major leagues’ first 10-game winner by pitching seven scoreless innings and sent Matt Harvey to his first loss of the season, leading the visiting St. Louis Cardinals over the New York Mets in a classic pitching matchup. Wainwright (10-3) retired his first 11 batters before David Wright’s single, and allowed four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Matt Carpenter tripled in a run in the third and Allen Craig gave the Cards a 2-0 lead in the eighth with an RBI single.
Nationals 5, Rockies 4 — Ryan Zimmerman homered and drove in three runs, Ian Desmond got four hits and the visiting Washington Nationals beat the depleted Colorado Rockies. The Rockies lost four players and a coach, as well as the rubber match of the three-game series. Outfielders Carlos Gonzalez and Dexter Fowler were injured early and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki left for an undisclosed reason in the eighth. Reliever Wilton Lopez and pitching coach Jim Wright were ejected in the seventh.
Cubs 6, Reds 5 — Pinch-hitter Julio Borbon had a two-out RBI single in the 14th inning to help the Chicago Cubs end Cincinnati’s record 12-game winning streak at Wrigley Field. Hector Rondon (1-0) pitched two of the Chicago bullpen’s eight scoreless innings. Starlin Castro led off the 14th with a single, stole second and got to third on Alfonso Soriano’s groundout.
Giants 10, Pirates 0 — Matt Cain allowed two hits over 6⅔ innings and the visiting San Francisco Giants pounded the Pittsburgh Pirates. A year to the day after throwing a perfect game against Houston, Cain (5-3) was nearly flawless again. He struck out three and walked two, giving up a single to Garrett Jones in the fifth and a double to Andrew McCutchen in the seventh.
Thursday’s interleague result
Phillies 3, Twins 2 — Cliff Lee allowed two runs in seven strong innings, Ben Revere had four hits and scored the go-ahead run, and the visiting Philadelphia Phillies rallied to snap a five-game losing streak. The speedy Revere slid home with nobody out in the eighth, scoring from third base on Jimmy Rollins’ chopper.
