Denver Nuggets coach George Karl said he is still having a tough time dealing with the death of his friend, former Utah and Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus.
Karl spoke Monday about his friendship with Majerus, who died of heart failure Saturday night. The two became friends while working at the Pete Newell Big Man camp at Stanford University in 1986 and the friendship grew over the years.
Karl said Majerus treated “me like I was his brother,” and that Karl’s son, Coby, considered Majerus part of the family.
While Majerus was known as a college coach, Karl invited him to work with the Nuggets and offer insight over the past seven years.
Majerus, a Milwaukee native, compiled a 517-216 record over 25 years with Saint Louis, Ball State, Utah and Marquette.
Lakers guard Steve Blake will undergo laparoscopic surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn abdominal muscle and will miss at least six to eight weeks.
Blake has missed 10 games since being diagnosed with the strain on Nov. 12.
He averaged 5.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.4 assists playing 26 minutes per game in seven games this season.
Marvin Williams missed his third straight game for the Utah Jazz because of concussion-like symptoms and Derrick Favors was out again Monday night at home against the Los Angeles Clippers because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
DeMarre Carroll started at small forward in place of Williams.
Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said the injuries are more of a defensive hit, especially with the Clippers in town.
Williams was averaging 10.4 points and 3.8 rebounds. Favors, a power forward, leads the team with 32 blocked shots and is third in rebounding with 7.5 a game.
Favors sat out Saturday’s loss to Houston and an ultrasound Monday confirmed his injury.
Favors and Williams remain day-to-day.
