Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul didn’t play Monday night against the host Memphis Grizzlies because of a bruised right kneecap.
Paul bumped knees with J.J. Redick on Saturday with 54 seconds left in a 104-101 loss to Orlando. Eric Bledsoe started for Paul. The Clippers said Monday the guard will be listed day-to-day.
Paul leads the NBA with 386 assists and is second averaging 9.7 assists per game. He also leads the league with 97 steals and averaging 2.62 steals per game. He had a league-high 54 assists in his last four games.
The Grizzlies were without Rudy Gay, who was excused to attend his grandmother’s funeral in Baltimore.
76ers’ Bynum on mend
Andrew Bynum is hopeful he can return to the Philadelphia 76ers around next month’s All-Star break.
Bynum has not yet played in his first season with the Sixers as he recovers from bone bruises on both knees. Bynum took part in light shooting drills at Monday’s practice. He says he’s pain free.
Without Bynum, the Sixers are lagging at 16-22 and entered Monday four games behind Boston for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
Bynum has worked weights into his rehabilitation and started running on Monday. He is on a six-step rehabilitation process that he hopes will get him back into lineup around the Feb. 15 All-Star break.
Spurs guard Ginobili out
San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili is expected to miss 10-14 days with a left hamstring strain.
The Spurs say Ginobili had an MRI on Monday after getting hurt in the second quarter of Sunday night’s game against Minnesota.
Ginobili didn’t play after halftime against the Timberwolves after scoring 12 points. He also had five assists in his 12 minutes. San Antonio won 106-88 for its 12th consecutive home victory.
The 35-year-old Ginobili has already dealt with back spasms, a left quadriceps bruise and a thigh bruise this season, his 11th in the NBA. In 36 games, he is averaging 12.9 points and 4.6 assists per game.
Lakers’ Gasol still ailing
Pau Gasol is expected to miss his fifth straight game for the Los Angeles Lakers tonight while he recovers from a concussion.
Gasol wasn’t cleared to play Monday after another evaluation by the Lakers’ medical staff. The four-time All-Star forward was hurt during a game against Denver on Jan. 6 when JaVale McGee accidentally elbowed him in the nose.
Surgery today for Love
The hand surgery for Minnesota’s Kevin Love has been scheduled. The Timberwolves announced Monday that Love will have his third and fourth metacarpal repaired today in New York by Dr. Michelle Carson at the Hospital for Special Surgery.
The two-time All-Star power forward broke the bones during the Jan. 3 game at Denver, a recurrence of the injury he suffered first doing knuckle push-ups Oct. 17 at home.
