Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel will miss “a few weeks” with a sprained ligament in his right knee.

The injury will not require surgery, Bills coach Doug Marrone said Friday, a day after a 37-24 loss in Cleveland.

Manuel was injured in the third quarter Thursday night, when he was hit by Browns safety Tashaun Gipson at the end of a 14-yard run. Jeff Tuel, another rookie, replaced Manuel but was ineffective, completing 8-of-20 passes for 80 yards.

Marrone said the Bills will look into acquiring another quarterback and did not rule out the possibility of that player starting Buffalo’s next game Oct. 13 at Cincinnati.

Also, receiver Stevie Johnson has a strained back muscle that is not expected to keep him out of action, Marrone said. Johnson left Thursday’s game in the second quarter and did not return.

The Bills released punter Shawn Powell a day after he struggled against the Browns. Powell had trouble in angling punts away from Cleveland’s Travis Benjamin, who returned seven punts for a franchise-record 179 yards, including a 79-yard touchdown return.

Giants acquire Beason

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera confirmed the team traded veteran linebacker Jon Beason to the Giants, pending a physical in New York.

The Panthers reportedly will receive a late-round draft pick in return, although Rivera would not confirm that. Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman, who spent 15 years in the Giants’ front office before coming to Carolina in January, has been unavailable to the media.

Beason, 28, has been dealing with injuries since signing a five-year, $51.5 million contract extension in the summer of 2011. A torn Achilles in 2011 and knee and shoulder issues in 2012 limited him to just five games the past two seasons.

But Rivera expects Beason to pass his physical, which was scheduled for Friday.

And after a slow start through the first two games this year, Beason was replaced in the starting lineup at weakside linebacker by former University of Akron standout Chase Blackburn against the Giants two weeks ago. It was the first time in Beason’s 72 games with the Panthers that he didn’t start.
