NFL notebook: Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to have surgery

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will undergo surgery today on his left ankle and will be sidelined for four months.

Newton has experienced soreness in the ankle since the end of last season.

If all goes as expected, the Pro Bowler could return before training begins at the end of July.

Newton led the Panthers to a 12-4 record last season and the NFC South championship.

Irsay enters rehab

The family of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said he has placed himself in a treatment facility after police found multiple prescription drugs in his vehicle during a traffic stop Sunday in Carmel, Ind.

Irsay, 54, who admitted a painkiller dependency a decade ago, faces charges of misdemeanor driving while intoxicated and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance.

Patriots keep Edelman

The New England Patriots re-signed receiver Julian Edelman, a former Kent State quarterback, in a deal reportedly worth $17 million over four years.

Edelman caught a career-high 105 passes in his fifth season with the Patriots after totaling just 69 receptions in the first four.

The Carolina Panthers signed former New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper to a two-year contract. ... Mario Manning­ham, one of the New York Giants’ most productive receivers from 2008-2011, will rejoin the team after two seasons with the 49ers. ... The Chicago Bears agreed to a one-year contract with defensive lineman Israel Idonije, who spent last season with the Detroit Lions after playing his first nine for Chicago. ... The Jacksonville Jaguars signed former Baltimore Ravens receiver Tandon Doss, who could return punts for the Jags. ... The New Orleans Saints have agreed to a four-year deal with former Buccanners fullback Erik Lorig. ... Safety Brandon Meriweather is returning to the Washington Redskins for a third season after testing free agency.
