ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.: Trevor Bauer has been called up from Triple-A Columbus to start Saturday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
But what happens to Bauer when Carlos Carrasco is through serving his six-game suspension on Sunday?
"We’ve got Bauer, (Justin) Masterson, Ubaldo (Jimenez) and then Carrasco will start Tuesday,’’ manager Terry Francona said. “Then we can get everybody back in line.’’
That means the starts of Brett Myers and Zach McAllister will be pushed back a day.
And after the next turn of the rotation, Francona will determine whether Carrasco or Bauer stays.
How will he decide? One factor will be how well Bauer and Carrasco pitch.
All of this uncertainty arose because Scott Kazmir strained a rib cage muscle playing catch on Monday and is headed for the 15-day disabled list. Kazmir must stay on the DL unitl April 17, which means he will miss two or three starts.
Bauer will get one of those and Carrasco another. Will both pitchers get a third start? Will one prevail over the other? At the moment, those questions are unanswerable.
Meanwhile, don't expect Bauer to succumb to a case of nerves in his first Tribe start.
"It’s the way I am,’’ he said. "I wish I could get more excited. I pitched in the College World Series. I remember seeing it when I was a kid. But when I got there, it was, “Oh yeah, I pitched at Rosenblatt (Stadium).’’ But in hindsight, it was kind of cool.’’
