Former Kent State point guard Michael Porrini (Massillon) signed a contract with Gelisim Koleji Spor Kulubu of the Turkish Basketball League.
Porrini was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2011 and averaged 4.5 points per game in his two years with the Golden Flashes.
Porrini, a two-year letter winner with the Flashes, was the only player in the MAC to average better than nine points, five assists and four rebounds during league play in the 2011-12 season.
The season starts in mid-October and runs through the end of April.
The University of Akron men’s team will play the first of two home exhibition games tonight at 7:30 against Saint Louis.
The Zips will host Wright State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the final exhibition game before the regular season begins Aug. 24 when Florida Gulf Coast visits Akron.
Tickets for tonight’s match and all 2012 home games are $10 for general admission and $15 for reserved seats in the west bleachers.
UA students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge.
Seniors Chad Barson, Scott Caldwell, David Meves and Thomas Schmitt lead a Zips team that features eight returning starters and 10 letter winners from a 2011 team that finished 15-4-4 and advanced to the NCAA round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season.
Caldwell, who was named to the Hermann Trophy watch list Monday, led all returning players with six goals and 11 assists last season.
The Zips defeated Saint Louis 4-0 last season, led by a goal and three assists by Caldwell.
Mount Union defensive back Nick Driskill was selected as the projected 2012 Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday as OhioCollege Football.com announced its 2012 Preseason All-Ohio DIII Teams.
Driskill leads a first-team defense that includes Mount Union’s Charles Dieuseul, Matt Fechko and Isaiah Scott.
Quarterback Neal Seaman, receiver Jasper Collins and linemen Antonio Tate and Matt Mattox of Mount Union were selected to the first-team offense.
Linebacker Brendon Taylor of Wooster was named second- team defense.
