UA closes out its four-game homestand 1 p.m. Tuesday against Kentucky (8-1).

Sophomore Marie Case won the beam (9.800), tied for the win on the floor exercise (9.850) and second on the bars (9.850).

The Golden Flashes are in a four-team meet Friday at North Carolina State. KSU will also face Michigan State and Towson.

Brittany Maurer was the losing pitcher in both games.

In the loss to Charleston, Maurer had a two-out RBI double in the third inning and Rachael Ratcliffe led off the fourth with a solo home run.

More baseball

The University of Akron is 0-3 after dropping a doubleheader Saturday to Appalachian State 8-3 and 4-1 in Elon, N.C.

In the second game, Jon Pusateri allowed three runs in six innings pitched with six strikeouts. Freshman Pat Dyer threw one shutout inning of relief.

“Jon pitched very well,” Zips coach Rick Rembielak said. “He had six punchouts to just three walks and had decent command of his stuff all game long.”

The Zips’ lone tally came on Devan Ahart’s RBI triple in the eighth inning.

Sunday’s game against Elon was rained out.

Rifle team

The University of Akron placed second behind Ohio State 4,635-4,582 at the NCAA qualifier match in Columbus.

The top eight teams and selected individuals from events nationwide are invited to the NCAA Championship in March. John Hupp of UA tied OSU’s Amanda Furr for first place in the smallbore division. Like Hupp, Victoria Brown hopes to qualify in the air rifle after placing fourth.
