Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) made a last-second layup to give the University of Akron an 82-81 Mid-American Conference win over visiting Eastern Michigan on Wednesday night. Tecca finished with 20 points, three assists, two rebounds, and made 6-of-7 free throws for the Zips (15-7, 6-3).
Junior Carly Youngled UA in scoring with 23 points, shooting 9-of-10 from the field and 5-of-5 on 3-pointers. Guards Hanna Luburgh and Taylor Ruper each had 11 points, Kacie Cassell had 10 assists and Sina King had 10 rebounds for UA.
Track and field
The University of Akron’s Shawn Barber and Alexis Cooks each were named MAC Athlete of the Week. Barber, the top-ranked pole vaulter in the nation, broke his own site record at the Akron Invitational.
Cooks earned her second Athlete of the Week honor after throwing a personal best 68-11¾ in the weight throw competition.
