Shawn Barber, the nation’s top-ranked pole vaulter, placed first with a jump of 17 feet, 8½ inches, and the University of Akron track and field team swept the top three spots in the pole vault and claimed the top two spots in the women’s weight throw to lead the Zips in the first day of the Penn State National on Friday in State College, Pa.
Joe Wesley (16-8¾) placed second and Shawn Light (16-4¾) took third in the pole vault as the Zips continued to show their dominance in the event.
Alexis Cooks won the weight throw with a toss of 66-4¼, and Brittany Funk placed second with a toss of 62-2¼.
Sophomore Kyle Cochrun, who set the UA record in the 5,000 meter last winter, finished third overall with the fifth-fastest time in Zips history (14:45.58).
Nick Owens will be today’s first competitor for the Zips in the 400 meter at 10:55 a.m. Running events will continue throughout the day with field events beginning at noon.
Michael Eric scored 19 points and pulled down 16 rebounds and Josh Selby scored 16 points to lead the Charge to a 103-83 win over the Iowa Energy at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines on Friday.
The Charge (16-10) led 48-39 at halftime and scored 55 points in the second half to pull away for the win.
Kyle Gibson scored 14 points, Antoine Agudio scored 13 points and JaJuan Johnson added 11 points for the Charge.
Chris Wright led the Energy with 19 points.
The Charge host the Energy tonight at 7:30 at the Canton Memorial Civic Center.
