Sina King scored a game-high 23 points and Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) scored 20 points and the University of Akron women’s basketball team defeated Chicago State 86-45 on Thursday night at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago.

The Zips (9-4) led 41-9 at halftime and shot 55 percent from the field in their final nonconference game of the season.

Taylor Ruper scored 11 points for the Zips.

Kyle Gibson scored 16 points and Jon Leuer scored 14 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the Canton Charge defeated the Springfield Armor 90-81 on Thursday at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass.

JaJuan Johnson scored 13 points and Jorge Gutierrez added 11 for the Charge (9-8).

Track and Field

The University of Akron will host the inaugural Pole Vault Competition at Stile Athletic Field House this weekend. The event will feature some of the best pole vaulters in America.

Shawn Barber, Shawn Light, Joe Wesley, Ariane Beaumont-Courteau, Katherine Lee, Claire Lucas and Alexandra Wood from the University of Akron will take part in the event, which is highlighted by tonight’s Elite Competition.

Mark Hollis, a two-time U.S. national champion and Jordan Scott, the 2010 NCAA national champion, will compete in the event.

The event begins at 7 p.m. today and is open to the public and free of charge.
