Hanna Luburgh scored 25 points, Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) scored 18 points and the University of Akron women’s basketball team defeated visiting Bowling Green 68-63 on Thursday night at Rhodes Arena.

The Zips (13-7, 4-3 Mid-American Conference) trailed 36-32 at halftime but outscored the Falcons (13-7, 4-3) 36-27 in the second half for the conference win.

Luburgh made two free throws with 9:07 remaining in the second half to give the Zips a 46-45 advantage and Tecca followed with a layup with 7:43 remaining to put the Zips ahead for good, 48-45.

Luburgh also grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Zips.

The Zips host Buffalo at 2 p.m. Saturday.

More basketball

The Kent State women’s basketball team trailed 49-21 at halftime and were outscored 42-23 in the second half in a 91-44 loss to host Central Michigan on Thursday.

Tamzin Barroilhet and Heather Bachman each scored 10 points to lead the Golden Flashes (2-18, 0-7).

The Golden Flashes travel to Athens to face Ohio University at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Track and field

University of Akron junior Gabriel Genovesi was named the Mid-American Conference men’s track athlete of the week for the second consecutive week.

Genovesi broke the UA school record in the 800-
meter last weekend at the Penn State National with a time of 1:49.63. The mark is the 13th-fastest recorded in the country this season and is nearly two seconds faster than any other MAC athlete in the 2013 season.

Genovesi was the MAC Most Outstanding Male Track Performer at the MAC Indoor Championships last winter after winning the 800-meter.

The Zips will host the Akron Invitational at Stile Athletics Field House this weekend.
