The University of Akron scored first on an RBI single by right fielder Daulton Mosbarger in the second inning, but Quinnipiac answered with two runs in its half of the inning and went on to a 4-1 win over the Zips on Friday afternoon at the Chanticleer Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
UA starting pitcher JT Brubaker gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out three in 4⅔ innings to take the loss.
Sophomore outfielder Devan Ahart had two hits for the Zips.
UA (1-14) will play Quinnipiac again at 11 a.m. today.
Tyler Skulina was tagged for seven runs (five earned) in 5⅔ innings of Kent State’s 12-7 loss to Memphis on Friday night.
Skulina gave up four hits and four walks and struck out three. Center fielder Evan Campbell had four hits and two RBI and catcher Tony Monnot had two hits and two RBI for the Golden Flashes (4-11).
The University of Akron scored four times in the top of the seventh but the rally fell short in a 9-7 loss to host George Washington in the Capital Invitational.
Third baseman Shawna Hochstetler and designated player Jessica Schneider each went 3-for-3 for the Zips (10-10). Hochstetler scored twice and Schneider had three RBI.
UA pitcher Erin Seiler (5-6) gave up five runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out nine in five innings to take the loss.
Kent State is 13th in a 15-team field after the opening day of the SunTrust Gator Women’s Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
The Flashes shot 305 and are 20 shots behind leader Oklahoma State.
Freshman Josee Doyon is tied for 20th individually with a round of 73. Junior Erin Hawe and sophomore Natalie Goodson (Hudson) each shot 77 for KSU.
