Junior Hanna Luburgh scored 19 points and junior Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) scored 16 points for the University of Akron women’s basketball team in a 71-66 loss to Duquesne in the first round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament on Thursday in Pittsburgh.
The Zips (23-10) led 37-31 at halftime but were outscored by the Dukes 40-29 in the second half to end their historic season.
The Zips received an at-large bid to the WNIT after winning a program-best 23 games and made their first appearance in the Mid-American Conference title game.
The Zips won their first MAC East Division title and set a school record for nonconference wins with nine. This was the second time the Zips played in the WNIT and the third time UA reached the postseason.
Junior Sina King scored 15 points and has more than 1,000 career points. Senior Taylor Ruper added 14 points for the Zips.
Kent State University senior Dustin Kilgore, the 2011 national champion, continued his winning ways on Thursday with a 10-2 major decision over Iowa’s Nathan Burak in the morning session and a 10-2 major decision over Ohio’s Phil Wellington in the evening session to advance in the NCAA Division I National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Kilgore (41-0) will wrestle Micah Burak this morning in a quarterfinal match and try to extend his 60-match winning streak.
Burak is the last wrestler to defeat Kilgore in an NCAA match. Burak defeated Kilgore at the Southern Scuffle in 2010.
Senior Stevie Mitcheff advanced to the round of 16 with a win over Ed Klimara of Oklahoma State but was defeated by two-time national champion Matt McDonough of Iowa in the evening round.
Freshman Sam Wheeler dropped a 9-3 decision to Josh Asper of Maryland in the morning round and lost 10-6 to Virginia Tech’s Austin Gabel in the evening round to end his season.
Sophomore Caleb Marsh and freshman Mack McGuire each lost Thursday morning and wrestled in the consolation bracket Thursday night.
Nick Heflin (Perry) of Ohio State and Alex Utley (CVCA) each won their Thursday morning matches and looked to advance with wins in the Thursday evening round.
