Bowling Green bounced the Kent State women’s basketball team from the Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 76-35 victory over the visiting Golden Flashes on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (21-9) rolled to a 44-16 halftime lead and cruised to an easy win over the Flashes (3-27).
Senior Tamzin Barroilhet led the Flashes with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Baseball
The University of Akron scored twice in the first inning but was shut out the rest of the way and remans winless after an 8-2 loss to South Carolina Upstate.
Matt Larocca and Brady Stewart drove in runs in the first inning and Gerrad Rohan had two hits for the Zips (0-11).
Starting pitcher John Valek (0-3) gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk in 4⅓ innings.
• Junior pitcher Taylor Williams pitched a complete game, and Kent State scored twice in the sixth inning for a 2-1 win over host Charlotte on Saturday.
Williams gave up one run on eight hits, walked one and struck out three.
Sawyer Polen doubled and scored and Troy Summers doubled in a run in the sixth for the Golden Flashes (3-10).
Track and field
University of Akron pole vaulter Shawn Barber earned All-America honors by placing fifth in the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday in Fayetteville, Ark.
Barber cleared 18 feet, ½ inch on his first jump but could not better that height.
Brittany Funk finished ninth and Alexis Cooks was 16th in the weight throw. Gabriel Genovesi failed to qualify in the 800 despite posting the third-fastest time (1:49.74) in school history and Joe Wesley did not advance in the pole vault.
On Saturday, Alex McCune finished 10th in the heptathlon.
• Kent State freshman Dior Delophont earned All-America honors with a fifth-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Delophont tied the KSU record with a jump of 6-1½.
Melinda Sawnor placed 13th in the 800 meters and Ann Marie Duffus finished 13th in the long jump.
Soccer
Striker Rainaldo Barnes scored off an assist by Bryan Gallego during the first half and the University of Akron defeated Cleveland State 1-0 in an exhibition match on Friday night.
Softball
Jessica Schneider homered and drove in four runs for the University of Akron in a 9-5 win over Holy Cross on Friday.
Alissa Birkhimer (4-3) gave up one run and struck out five in five innings to get the win for the Zips.
• The Zips scored four runs in the top of the seventh to back the four-hit pitching of Erin Seiler (4-3) in a 5-1 win over South Dakota on Saturday.
Shawna Hochstetler hit a grand slam in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie.
Seiler gave up one run, struck out nine and walked one for the Zips (8-6).
• Kent State (8-9) lost 8-1 to Georgia and 3-0 to Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Flashes were held to four hits in the two games.
