The University of Akron men’s basketball team signed four players during the early signing period for the 2013-14 season.
Joining the Zips will be Kwan Cheatham of Cincinnati, B.J. Gladden of Charlotte, N.C., Aaron Jackson of Gahanna and Isaiah Johnson of Cincinnati.
“We are very excited about this class,” coach Keith Dambrot said in a news release. “They are very diversified, possess good skills and allow us to continue to play with the high-majors because of their size and strength.
“They come from great high school coaches and tremendous families. We believe these players allow us to continue our development as a basketball program.”
Cheatham, a 6-foot-9 power forward at Winton Woods High School, averaged 12.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals and 1.7 blocks as a junior.
Gladden, a 6-6 forward at Olympic High School, averaged 19 points and nine rebounds as a junior. He was ranked the No. 31 player in the class of 2013 in North Carolina by ESPN.
Jackson, a 6-6 guard from Gahanna Lincoln High School, averaged 15.6, 5.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game as a junior.
Johnson, a 6-10 center from Walnut Hills High School, averaged 17.3 points and 11.6 rebounds and 2.7 blocks as a junior.
Three players signed national letters of intent to join the University of Akron team.
Joining the Zips will be Chandler Morgan of Lexington, Ky., Zach Gollwitzer of Ballwin, Mo., and JB Williams of Danville, Ky.
“All three golfers have performed very well on the national stage and have earned some well-deserved accolades. I look forward to helping them reach their goals both on and off the course,” UA coach David Trainor said in a news release.
• The UA women’s golf team added two recruits to the program.
Lina Bengtsson of Goteborg, Sweden, and Mallory Etcheberry of Wesley Chapel, Fla., signed with the Zips on Tuesday.
“I am very proud of the signing class this year,” UA coach Jenny King said in a news release. “They are not only great on the course, but are also very good students in the classroom.”
Amanda Bedell of Hudson is one of seven recruits joining the University of Akron team.
Bedell, Jessica Kloehn of Milwaukee, Karley Kusan of Columbus, Brenna Mack of Mound, Minn., Callie Mack of Mound, Minn., Julie Shallman of Holt, Mich., and Julia Smagacz of Libertyville, Ill., all committed to join the program.
“With the loss of five seniors this year that played integral roles, we have parts of our system that need to be filled,” UA coach Ron Arenz said in a news release. “This class fills those gaps and adds depth to every position in our lineup.”
Bedell, a 6-foot right-side hitter, was named honorable mention All-Ohio as a senior.
“Amanda’s roots in Akron run deep, and we are excited that she is joining us,” Arenz said. “Her work ethic and physical strength will allow her to come in and challenge for playing time early in her career.”
Mount Union senior safety Nick Driskill of Wabash, Ind., was named one of 10 finalists for the Gagliardi Trophy given to the top all-around football player in NCAA Division III. He is a three-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection, twice named to the first team. In 2011 he was named an All-American and the D3football.com 2011 National Defensive Player of the Year.
This year, he leads the nation’s top defense with 63 tackles, 13.5 tackles for a loss and two forced fumbles. He has a 3.77 grade-point average as an exercise science major.
