Two first-half goals by No. 3 Akron proved to be the difference Wednesday night in a 2-0 win against Penn State at Jeffrey Field in University Park, Pa.
Reinaldo Brenes scored for the Zips in the 27th minute for a 1-0 lead with an assist from Eric Stevenson. Both players earned a spot last week on the Top Drawer Soccer’s weekly National team.
In the 41st minute, Scott Caldwell scored on a penalty kick.
The Zips (8-1-2) outshot the Nittany Lions 9-4 in the first half and also had a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, finishing with a 7-1 edge for the match.
In the second half, the Nittany Lions (6-4-2) had a 6-3 advantage in shots, but could not get the ball past senior goalkeeper David Meves, who had three saves.
The shutout is the 46th of Meves’ four-year career, two behind all-time leader Evan Bush, who had 48 from 2005 through 2008. Meves is also the school’s all-time leader in wins with 67.
The Zips have allowed more than one goal in only one game this season.
With the victory, the Zips tie the all-time series record at 15-13-5 in a series that dates back to 1978.
The Zips will be on the road Saturday afternoon for a Mid-American Conference match at Northern Illinois.
