COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCOUTING REPORTS Kent State vs. Ohio State

Kickoff: Noon at Ohio Stadium (102,329 capacity) in Columbus.

Records: Kent State is 3-3 overall, 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference and 1-2 in its East Division; OSU is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten Conference.

Coaches: Doug Martin is 15-25 and is in his fourth year at Kent; Jim Tressel is 203-71-2 overall and 68-14 in his seventh season at OSU.

Broadcast: Big Ten Network; WNIR (100.1-FM), WAKR (1590-AM), WHBC (1480-AM), WKNR (850-AM).

Notebook: Kent State comes in with the top-rated defense in the MAC and the conference's leading rusher in Eugene Jarvis. None of that might matter if coach Doug Martin is true to his words of earlier this week, when he said his starters won't see a lot if any playing time so they can be ready for the rest of his conference's schedule. The Buckeyes have the top defensive unit in the Big Ten and are efficient on offense. Tressel said that his frontline players will see plenty of action. Something to watch: whether the offense continues to work wide receivers Ray Small and Brian Hartline into the game. With Purdue covering Brian Robiskie tightly, Small and Hartline saw 13 balls total. Their productivity is a key to the rest of the season.

Temple at Akron

Kickoff: 6 tonight, Rubber Bowl (31,000).

Records: Temple is 1-5 overall, 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference; Akron is 3-3 overall, 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference.

Coaches: Al Golden (2-16) is in his second year at Temple; J.D. Brookhart (22-21) is in his fourth year at Akron.

Broadcast: WARF (1350-AM); http://www.Gozips.com.

Notebook: The phrase ''trap game'' is heard a lot, a reference to a team looking past an opponent. Well, the Zips are in no position to look past any team, even Temple. The Owls' only win was against Northern Illinois (16-15) last week on a last-second field goal, and the five losses included battles against Navy, Bowling Green and Connecticut. Led by freshman linebacker Amara Kamara (6.8 tackles a game), Temple has the second best defense in the conference, allowing 377.8 total yards per game. Kent State is first (332.7) and Akron is fifth (401.8.) The Owls are No. 1 in the MAC in pass defense, allowing 188.2 passing yards a game. Akron's offense is averaging 186.0 passing yards a game.

Hiram at Wooster

Kickoff: 1 p.m. today at John P. Papp Stadium. Radio: WKVX (960-AM). Records: Hiram is 0-5, 0-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference; Wooster is 1-4, 1-1 in the NCAC. Notebook: Hiram trailed Kenyon only 28-14 at the half last Saturday but allowed three touchdowns in the third quarter on its way to losing 49-21. It was the Terriers' 21st consecutive regular-season loss. Quarterback Trevor Henderson completed 15-of-30 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown. Wooster, which opened with four consecutive losses, finally got a victory last Saturday, edging Ohio Wesleyan 13-9. Tailback Dustin Sheppard scored the winning touchdown on a 34-yard run with 2:58 remaining. Sheppard finished with a season-high 116 yards rushing on 20 carries. Walsh at Malone

Kickoff: 1 p.m. today at Fawcett Stadium in Canton. Radio: WCER (900-AM), WHLO (640-AM), WNPQ (95.9-FM). Records: Walsh is 3-3, 0-2 in the MSFA Mideast. Malone is 5-1, 2-0 in the MSFA Mideast. Notebook: Two nearby rivals going in opposite directions in records and on offense clash for the 13th time today at Fawcett Stadium. Walsh has lost two consecutive games, both in the MSFA Mideast, and has scored only 16 points on one touchdown in that span. Malone, meanwhile, brings a five-game win streak into this backyard rivalry with an offense that scores 37.8 points a game and an attack that generates 464 yards a contest. Walsh running back Clinton Blossomgame had a four-game streak of 100-yard rushing games snapped in last week's 9-6 loss at Urbana, but the freshman still has a 4.0 average per rush on 685 yards. Quarterback Marc Pullen (Ellet) was sacked a school-record 10 times last week. Craig McConnell (Massillon) had two interceptions for the Cavaliers. Malone's surge has moved it into 16th in the latest NAIA poll. Quarterback Billy Bob Orsagh has completed 65 percent of his passes for an average of 257 yards a game with 14 touchdowns. Running back Bernard Payton has 653 yards on the ground with 22 receptions. He leads the league in all-purpose running (157 yards per game). Malone has done most of the damage in the first half, outscoring the opposition 142-76. Walsh leads the all-time series, 8-4, but Malone handed the then-ninth-ranked Cavaliers a 20-10 setback last year. The winner of the game will be awarded the annual rotating Dick Gallagher Memorial Trophy, named in honor of the late executive director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Wilmington at Mount Union

Kickoff: 1:30 p.m. today at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance. Radio: WDNP (1310-AM). Records: Mount Union is 5-0, 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Wilmington is 1-4, 1-3 in the OAC. Notebook: No. 1-ranked Mount Union begins the second half of the season with hopes of duplicating the first half. The Purple Raiders are halfway toward their 16th consecutive OAC title, and they have done it in convincing style by outscoring the opposition 143-0 in the first quarter and 235-3 in the first half. The first-unit offense has scored on 34 of its 42 possessions and the first-string defense has not allowed a touchdown in five games. Running back Nate Kmic, who averages 8.7 yards a carry with 14 touchdowns on the ground, has moved into fifth place on the OAC's all-time rushing list with 4,119 yards. Last week, running back Justin Wray scored four touchdowns on just eight carries (82 yards) in the 44-0 thrashing of ninth-ranked Ohio Northern. Quarterback Greg Micheli has completed 74 of 93 passes (79.6 percent) with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. The Raiders, who are 9-0 all-time against Wilmington, have the nation's second-longest win streak with 28, behind (Division II) Grand Valley State's 33 straight wins. Wilmington's lone win came against Muskingum, 42-40. The Quakers are allowing 40.6 points and 525.6 yards a game. Northern Michigan at Ashland

Kickoff: 1 p.m. today at Community Stadium in Ashland. Radio: WNCO (1340-AM). Records: Ashland is 3-1, 3-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Northern Michigan is 1-4, 1-4 in the GLIAC. Notebook: It's homecoming at Ashland and the alums should witness plenty of offense as the Eagles return to action after a bye week. For the first time in school history, Ashland has scored 50 or more points in consecutive games (113 points) and it's the first time the school has hit the 50-point mark twice in a season since 1972. Northern Michigan has scored 37 or more points twice this season and is coming off its first win of the year. Ashland leads the GLIAC in total offense (502.2) and is second in scoring (43.2 points per game). Quarterback Billy Cundiff (Uniontown /Green) is third in the GLIAC in total offense (292 yards per game) and passing yards per game (261.5). Wide receiver Brandon Gilmore (Mansfield/Madison) is 11th in Division II in receiving yards per game (99.8) and wideout David Ziegelhofer (Lexington) is 20th with 90.0 reception yards an outing. The Eagles are the least penalized team in the league with 14.5 penalty yards a game. They must contain tailback Mark Bossuah, the GLIAC's leading rusher, who has 742 yards, a 6.3 average per carry and five touchdowns. Quarterback Buddy Rivera is closing in on becoming Northern Michigan's career leader in total offense. Ashland is looking to go 4-1 to start a season for the first time since 1999. Staff reports
