OSU's two-game losing streak ends

Freshman Buford hits career high to lead Buckeyes

By Bob Baptist
Columbus Dispatch

COLUMBUS: The Ohio State men's basketball team enjoyed welcome relief from the shackles of Big Ten defense on Friday night in an 89-65 victory over Houston Baptist in Value City Arena.

It was the Buckeyes' final nonconference game of the season. They have a 10-1 record outside the Big Ten.

Ohio State (11-3) scored its most points of the season after struggling to make shots in losses at Michigan State and Minnesota in its previous two games. The Buckeyes led by 35 points in the second half.

Freshman William Buford scored a career high for the second consecutive game with 19 points to lead Ohio State, which had lost three of its previous four games. Buford had 17 points at Michigan State on Tuesday.

Evan Turner added 15 points and Jeremie Simmons and B.J. Mullens 12 apiece.

Gordon Watt, a transfer from Purdue, led Houston Baptist (1-16) with 28 points.

Junior-college transfer Nikola Kecman, who became eligible Tuesday after a 12-game suspension, got his first playing time for the Buckeyes and scored six points.

Ohio State scored its most points in a half this season in taking a 55-26 halftime lead. Its previous high was 51 in the second half of a win at the University of Miami on Dec. 2.

The Buckeyes made their first five shots from the field tonight, led 18-5 less than five minutes into the game and steadily expanded their lead as they shot 66.7 percent from the field.

Buford could not miss at the outset, with two 3-pointers and a three-point play in the first 2:12. He and Turner finished the half with 11 points apiece.

Ohio State will return to Big Ten play Tuesday night at home against Indiana. The Buckeyes are 1-2 in the conference.
