Outdoors almanac - Feb. 2

CALENDAR

• Today through Sunday — The Third Annual Greater Akron Hunting, Fishing and Boat Supershow and Sale will be held at the Summit County Fairgrounds, Tallmadge. The arena building will house exhibitors and bargains for the hunter, fisherman and outdoor enthusiast. On Saturday, the first 100 kids will receive free rods courtesy of Fish and Field Report. The show features seminars and giveaways. Hours are 3 to 8 p.m. today; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6; children younger than 12 are free. • Feb. 16 — The Ohio Central Basin Steelheaders present their fifth annual steelhead workshop at 7:30 p.m. at the Ampol Hall, 4737 Pearl Road, Cleveland. This program is free and open to the public. • Feb. 19 — Crystal Springs Bowhunters will host a 3-D outdoor target shoot with 30 total targets. Open to the public, crossbows are permitted at their location on Deerfield Avenue NW in Canal Fulton. Memberships are $35 per individual or family. Cost for members is $5 per shoot; the cost is $10 for nonmembers. Children 15 and younger shoot for free with a paying adult. Similar events: March 18; April 15; May 20; June 17; July 15; Aug. 19; and the Last Draw Classic on Sept. 15. Registration is 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Concessions available. • Feb. 25-26 — The Lake Milton Fish and Game Club, 4314 Bedell Road, Berlin Center, will host a 3-D archery shoot. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Breakfast 8 to 10 a.m. Crossbows are permitted. HUNTER ED

Those purchasing an Ohio hunting license for the first time must complete a hunter education course. Additionally, Ohio hunters seeking licenses in other states may be required to show proof that they completed such a course. There is no charge. For more information, call 800-WILDLIFE.

BOATING

• Registration Renewals — Ohioans can now renew their watercraft registrations if they are set to expire on March 1. The renewal process can be completed conveniently online, through the mail or in person, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Watercraft. Ohio watercraft registrations are valid for a period of three years. In 2011, Ohio had a record of 426,674 registered watercraft, and approximately a third of Ohio’s watercraft registrations will expire on March 1. The Division of Watercraft processed a record of 16,635 registration renewals online at www.ohiodnr.com/watercraft in 2011. The online renewal process may be utilized 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Sept. 30. Once the boat owner’s transaction is successfully completed, a valid boat registration and decals will be sent in the mail within 10 days. A listing of watercraft registration agents, which includes each of the Division of Watercraft’s 11 area office locations, fee schedules and other registration information, is available online at ohiodnr.com/watercraft or by calling the Division of Watercraft toll free (in Ohio only) at 877-4BOATER (877-426-2837).
