Senior guard Josh Sasinouski had 41 points and 15 rebounds, both career highs, to lead Coventry to a 64-63 overtime victory over Canton South in a Division II boys sectional game on Monday night at the Canton Memorial Field House.
Sasinouski made 11 field goals in the game, five of which were 3-pointers, and made 14-of-15 free throws.
''He had the game of his life,'' Coventry coach Chet Feldman said. ''I knew he was capable of doing this. His motivation was Coventry hasn't won a first-round game in five years. He averaged 22 (points) and 10 (rebounds) per game this season. He averages a true, legit, double-double. He is our player and tonight he played and guarded every position.''
Sasinouski made a 3-pointer with 8.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter in front of two defenders to cut Coventry's deficit to 50-49. He then made two free throws in the closing seconds to force overtime.
''That a was a tough shot, I'm not going to lie,'' Sasinouski said.
In the extra session he had 11 of his team's 13 points.
''I was just real comfortable,'' Sasinouski said. ''I felt like I was going to make all of those shots.''
The Comets and Wildcats both have 10-11 records.
Coventry led 19-8 at the end of the first quarter and was up 25-20 at halftime. Canton South then rallied and led late in the fourth quarter.
''It was crucial to get off to a good start,'' Feldman said. ''They had already beat us once by 14 points.''
Coventry will play St. Vincent-St. Mary at 6:15 p.m. Friday.
