Local small college football: Walsh rallies for 30-29 win over Tiffin

Walsh University rallied from a nine-point deficit with two third-quarter touchdowns to defeat host Tiffin on Saturday afternoon.

The Cavaliers (3-5 overall, 3-4 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) trailed 26-17 before freshman running back Aaron Male (Ellet) scored on a 6-yard run.

The Cavaliers took the lead when senior Jason Fracassa scored on a 2-yard run.

The Cavaliers held the Dragons (2-6, 1-5) to 236 yards of total offense and just 5 yards of rushing, a Walsh record for fewest rushing yards allowed in a game. The defense also forced three turnovers, all interceptions.

Mount Union 48, Otterbein 0

The top-ranked Purple Raiders limited visiting Otterbein (3-4, 3-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) to 37 total yards and just one first down in the shutout victory.

Mount Union (7-0, 6-0) led 41-0 at halftime.

Luc Meacham caught two touchdown passes from quarterback Kevin Burke in the first half. The first, a 67-yard completion, made it 7-0, the second, a 6-yarder, made it 21-0.

Burke completed just 5-of-13 passes for 128 yards, but three of the completions went for touchdowns, the third a 28-yard strike to Brian Gainer.

Ashland 27, Malone 20

The Pioneers got off to a good start but could not hold the advantage in a loss to the host Eagles.

The Pioneers (1-7) struck first on a 1-yard touchdown run by Steven Niewiedzial and went ahead 14-7 on a 3-yard run by quarterback Brandyn Eckhart.

Two touchdown passes by freshman quarterback Tra’Von Chapman (Kent Roosevelt) let Ashland (4-4) take control.

Chapman completed 20-of-31 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns.
