MAC roundup: Northern Illinois rolls to win over Eastern Michigan

Eastern Michigan players saw something they didn’t expect when they lined up against No. 23 Northern Illinois on Saturday.

“They did a good job going out quick, they showed formations they had not shown and I thought it unnerved our guys a little bit,” Eagles coach Ron English said.

The host Huskies (8-0, 4-0 Mid-American Conference) took advantage of the uncertainty and scored on their first three possessions on the way to an easy victory.

Northern Illinois’ Jordan Lynch threw four touchdown passes and caught another.

Eastern Michigan (1-7, 0-4) lost its seventh in a row.

Western Michigan 31, UMass 30

Zach Terrell, who had four touchdowns and 275 passing yards, completed a 54-yard scoring strike to Corey Davis with five minutes remaining in the game to give visiting Western Michigan a victory over the University of Massachusetts.

Coach P.J. Fleck garnered his first win at Western Michigan (1-8, 1-4) as the Broncos had to hold on for their first victory of the season.

The Minutemen (1-7, 1-3) mounted a 68-yard scoring drive in the final minutes that ended with Lorenzo Woodley rushing in for the score from the 2 with 22 seconds remaining.

Massachusetts opted to go for two, but A.J. Doyle’s pass attempt fell incomplete.

Toledo 28, Bowling Green 25

Terrance Owens threw for three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:22 remaining, to lead visiting Toledo over Bowling Green.

The Rockets (5-3, 3-1) blew a 21-0 lead after Bowling Green (5-3, 3-1) scored on Travis Greene’s 7-yard run with 5:59 remaining.

However, Owens led the Rockets down the field, scrambling for 17 yards to the Falcons’ 11 on third-and-26 before throwing the fourth-down score to Alonzo Russell, who had two touchdown catches.

Ohio 41, Miami 16

Tyler Tettleton and Donte Foster proved to be a dynamic duo as Tettleton found Foster for three touchdowns and host Ohio defeated Miami.

Beau Blankenship ran for 172 yards for the the Bobcats (6-2, 3-1). Austin Boucher threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Dustin White and led Miami (0-8, 0-4) in rushing with 13 carries for 22 yards.
