NBA notebook — Dec. 31

Associated Press

Sacramento Kings guard Tyreke Evans is getting a second opinion on his sore left knee.

Evans did not travel with the Kings on Monday to Detroit, where they begin a four-game road trip today. Instead, Evans is scheduled to visit with Dr. Steve Lombardo in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Evans has missed 12 games this season because of his nagging knee. He averaged 15.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists in the 18 games he has played.

The 2009-10 NBA Rookie of the Year will be a restricted free agent after the season.

Minnesota adds Hayward

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed Lazar Hayward to try and provide some depth to an injury-hampered backcourt.

The Wolves acquired Hayward from Washington on draft night in 2010, and he played sparingly for them as a rookie. They traded him to Oklahoma City last December.

Minnesota was in the market for a player who could play both shooting guard and small forward after a rash of knee injuries.

Josh Howard is out for the season, Malcolm Lee is out indefinitely and Chase Budinger isn’t expected back until March. Brandon Roy is trying one more treatment on his chronic knee pain and likely won’t be ready for a month.

Hayward has averaged 2.9 points in 8.2 minutes over two seasons.
