University of Akron volleyball coach Ron Arenz announced on Thursday that junior libero Jill Paluch will try out for the U.S. Women’s National Team today at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.
Paluch will be one of the 248 participants representing 90 different colleges.
Paluch, named MAC East Co-defensive player of the week in September, led the Zips to the MAC Tournament quarterfinals last season for the first time in nine years.
Paluch is eligible for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team, the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Senior A2 Team and/or the U.S. Women’s Junior National Volleyball Team.
University of Akron freshman Louis Birchall was named MAC golfer of the week on Thursday.
Birchall led the Zips to a 14th-place finish at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate last weekend and carded a career-best three-round score of 10-over-par. Birchall finished in 44th place and tied his career-low round of 74 in the final round of play.
Birchall is the second Zip to win MAC golfer of the week. Charlie Bull earned the honor on Oct. 17.
The Zips travel to Aiken, S.C., on March 11 for the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
University of Akron senior forward Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) was named to the Capital One Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Tecca is the first player in Akron women’s basketball history to earn Academic All-American status and the only player in the MAC to earn the honor this year. Tecca was part of the Capital One All-District IV third team in 2011.
Tecca has led the Zips in scoring this season with 18.8 points per game and is a three-time MAC East Player of the Week this season. Tecca has scored in double figures in every game this season and is now UA’s fourth all-time leading scorer with 1,449 points.
Tecca carried a 3.89 GPA throughout her undergraduate career and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in marketing management in December. She is currently working toward her MBA.
University of Akron students wishing to attend the men’s basketball game against Kent State on March 8, must pick up a free student ticket to ensure admission to the game.
Free tickets are being distributed in advance instead of at the door on game day due to the expected capacity crowd.
Tickets can be picked up at tonight’s game at Rhodes Arena and at the women’s games on Feb. 28 and March 3. Students can also pick up tickets at the Student Union, Rob’s Cafe, the Rec Center and the Polsky Building.
The University of Akron softball team’s weekend schedule at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament at Kennesaw State in Georgia has been modified due to heavy rain in the area.
Today’s scheduled game has been canceled and UA will now play a doubleheader on Saturday with games at 10 a.m. against Northern Colorado and at 2 p.m. against Georgia State.
The Zips will conclude tournament play at 10 a.m. Sunday against Troy.
Track and field
The University of Akron men’s track and field team will try to win its third consecutive team title and fifth consecutive MAC Championship at the MAC Indoor Championships this weekend at Eastern Michigan University.
Akron, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Kent State will compete for the men while all league members will compete on the women’s side.
The men’s team is the top-ranked MAC school in the Great Lakes Region and fifth overall. The women’s team is ranked second in the MAC and seventh overall.
The meet will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the women’s pentathlon and continue through Saturday.
