Freshman midfielder Madison Helterbran scored her first collegiate goal with 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime period to give the Kent State women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over host Western Michigan on Friday.
Helterbran scored on a header to the far post from 6 yards out off a corner kick by junior Jaclyn Dutton in the 100th minute to give the Golden Flashes (9-3-2, 4-2-1 MAC) their first win over the Broncos (5-7-3, 1-3-3) since 2008.
The Golden Flashes outshot the Broncos 13-5 and had a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Senn saved the Broncos’ only shot on goal.
The Golden Flashes will play their final road game of the season against Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Central Michigan’s Jennifer Gassman scored in the 80th minute to give the host Chippewas a 2-1 win over the University of Akron women’s soccer team Friday night.
Freshman forward Megan Waskowski led the Zips (4-10-0, 0-7-0) with a goal in the 33rd minute off an assist from Ashley Hughes.
The University of Akron swim team placed second twice at the Tom Stubbs Relays, a series of 10 exhibition relays at Bowling Green that were not scored.
The Zips finished second in the 3x100-yard breast stroke relay (Hannah Raspopovich, Amanda Lawson and Kendra Colby) and the 4x100-yard IM relay (Kelsea Cross, Kelsey Ferrante, Erin Seiler and Catherine Carr).
The 4x100-yard relay team finished one second behind winner Toledo. The Zips’ first regular season meet will be Oct. 19 at Duquesne.
• The University of Akron volleyball team lost in four sets to host Western Michigan. Morgan Kuhn had 45 assists and Chelsea Harvey and Jill Paluch each had 18 digs for the Zips.
• The Kent State volleyball team lost its 14th match of the year in straight sets to host Ball State. Hannah Herc had 16 digs and Jenny Buczek had 15 assists to lead the Flashes.
