The University of Akron announced that 6-foot-11 center Patrick Forsythe is eligible for the 2012-13 season.
The former Brunswick star will be granted a hardship waiver so that he can play this season, a decision that will likely bolster the Zips. Forsythe transferred from West Virginia University recently to be closer to his father, who is blind.
Forsythe was an All-Ohio Division I first-team selection as a senior at Brunswick, where he averaged 22.5 points, 12.6 rebounds and 6.1 blocks.
He was named the district player of the year and chose West Virginia over scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Ohio State and Cincinnati.
University of Akron juniors Reinaldo Brenes and Eric Stevenson were each named to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team after a 5-0 win Friday over Florida Atlantic, in which each scored two goals. It was Brenes’ second consecutive multiple-goal game, while it was the first multi-goal match for Stevenson.
Akron is in the hunt after one round of the Firestone Invitational on Monday. The Zips, Iowa State and Eastern Michigan tied for fourth place after a round of 2-over 290. Ball State leads the field after posting a score of 6-under 282. Ryan Harris and Charlie Bull sit inside the top 10 following rounds of 2-under 70 and 1-under 71, respectively. Harris is tied for eighth while Bull is tied for 10th.
