Robbie Derschang scored his first goal of the season in the 76th minute to give the Zips the lead in their 2-1 Mid-American Conference soccer victory over visiting Northern Illinois.
Adam Najem scored in the 12th minute to give the Zips (11-3-1, 4-1-0 MAC) the early lead. Najem later assisted on Derschang’s goal.
The Huskies tied it up three minutes later on a goal by Isaac Kannah.
The Zips outshot the Huskies 18-4.
The University of Akron opened its swimming and diving dual-meet schedule with a 187.5-109.5 loss to Mid-American Conference opponent Miami.
The Zips earned victories in the 200-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Erin Seiler took top honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.58 and Carla McNamara won the 3-meter diving with a score of 282.52.
The Zips remain winless in the MAC after falling 3-1 to Central Michigan.
Alex Wiederholt, Alex Cocklin and Julie Shallman each posted double-digit kill totals for the Zips (6-15, 0-10).
Ashley Holder had 37 assists and Jill Paluch led the defense with 24 digs.
