Zips football: UA set for 2017 opener in Happy Valley against Penn State

From a UA news release:  UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The University of Akron football team will open the 2017 college football season on the road, heading to Beaver Stadium to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions on Sept. 2, 2017.

The matchup will mark the second time in a four-year stretch that the Zips and Nittany Lions face off as Akron heads to University Park, Pa., on Sept. 6, 2014.

Penn State leads the all-time series 3-0, with all three meetings coming since the 1999 campaign. Akron last faced Penn State on Sept. 5, 2009, falling 31-7 to the then-ranked No. 8 Nittany Lions.

The Zips have faced 14 Big Ten teams since the start of the 2001 season and will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sept. 14 to face Michigan this season.
