Hanna Luburgh fired in a career-high 30 points but Akron was unable to complete its comeback down the stretch in a 74-73 loss at St. Francis (Pa.) Sunday, the Zips’ first loss of the season.
Down by one point with eight seconds remaining and the ball, Akron was caught with no timeouts and failed to find a good look at a last-second shot.
Kacie Cassell passed out a career-high 10 assists, and Sina King finished with her second double-double of the season, putting up 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Rachel Tecca (Archbishop Hoban) continued her comeback. After struggling with two points in the first half, the junior finished with 14 points.
St. Francis (3-0) has won the last two meetings with the Zips by a combined two points.
Akron travels to Providence on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Behind four individual champions, Kent State won the Navy Classic on Saturday in Annapolis, Md., finishing first with 115.5 points, just ahead of host Navy, which had 109.5 points in the nine-team tournament.
Fifth-year seniors Dustin Kilgore and Casey Newburg remained unbeaten and were joined on the top of the podium by Caleb Marsh and Stevie Mitcheff.
Kilgore (197) pinned all three of his opponents. Mitcheff earned his first title of the season, going 4-0 with two major decisions including an all-Kent State final at 125 as he edged freshman Alfredo Gray (Wadsworth) 6-5.
Marsh (165) was in his first competition of the season coming off an injury. The sophomore went 4-0 and defeated Navy’s Jacob Schalles 9-5 in the finals.
The Golden Flashes’ next competition is Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 in Las Vegas for the Cliff Keen Invitational.
