Buddle returning to play for Galaxy
• Edson Buddle returned to the Los Angeles Galaxy after a year in the German second division, adding yet another scoring talent to the defending MLS champions’ star-studded roster. The 30-year-old American forward re-signed with the Galaxy one day after his contract was terminated by Ingolstadt.
• England captain John Terry will stand trial in London after the European Championship over allegations he racially abused an opponent during a Premier League match — possibly clearing the way for him to play in the tournament.

Cordero, Blue Jays agree on contract
• Reliever Francisco Cordero and the Toronto Blue Jays finalized a $4.5 million, one-year contract. The 36-year-old right-hander was 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA and 37 saves in 43 chances for Cincinnati last season, reaching 30 saves for the seventh time. He held batters to a .198 average, the lowest of his career. Cordero, a three-time All-Star, has a 44-45 record with a 3.17 ERA and 327 saves.
• Carlos Guillen is returning to Seattle after agreeing to a minor-league contract with the Mariners. The 36-year-old spent the past eight seasons in Detroit where he was a three-time All-Star and hit .308 in his career with the Tigers playing five positions.
• The Pittsburgh Pirates signed right-handed reliever Juan Cruz to a minor-league contract and will invite him to spring training.
• The Washington Nationals agreed to terms with right-handed reliever Chad Durbin for a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. He went 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA in 56 games last year with the Indians.

Titans’ Britt pleads guilty to charge
• Tennessee Titans receiver Kenny Britt pleaded guilty to a downgraded charge stemming from an arrest in New Jersey. Britt entered the plea in Hoboken Municipal Court to a charge of disturbing the peace and paid a $1,500 fine.
• Longtime NFL assistant coach Bill Muir followed through on his plans to retire, informing the Kansas City Chiefs that he wouldn’t return for a 35th season in the league. He was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator last season.
• The Oakland Raiders brought back Greg Knapp as the team’s offensive coordinator. Knapp spent the past two seasons as quarterbacks coach in Houston.
• The St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission proposed $124 million in improvements to the Edward Jones Dome in hopes of keeping the Rams in St. Louis.

Michigan State star out with knee injury
• Michigan State forward Draymond Green was diagnosed with a sprained left knee. Green had an MRI on Wednesday and is listed as day to day. Green was injured in Tuesday’s loss at Illinois.
• Charlie Spoonhour, the popular, homespun coach who took Saint Louis to the NCAA Tournament three times behind a prolific offense, died Wednesday in Chapel Hill, N.C., after battling a lung disease. He was 72. Spoonhour also coached at Missouri State and UNLV.

Mayweather to fight Cotto on May 5
• Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he will fight Miguel Cotto on May 5 in Las Vegas. Mayweather made the announcement after getting a conditional one-fight license and a lecture from Nevada athletic commissioners, who told the fighter, his manager-promoter and his lawyer they want a prefight report May 1 to ensure Mayweather abides by conditions set by a Nevada judge in a criminal domestic violence case that will have him begin serving 90 days in jail June 1.
• The Daytona 500 will boast a record purse of more than $19 million, and the winner of NASCAR’s biggest race is guaranteed a minimum $1.4 million. Daytona International Speedway also announced Wednesday a $200,000 bonus for the driver leading at the halfway point of the race.
• New Jersey Devils forward Eric Boulton and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Jared Boll (illegal check) were fined $2,500 by the NHL. Boulton slashed Rangers forward Mike Rupp, a Brunswick resident, early in the second period Tuesday.
