Associated Press Former University of Akron Athletic Director Mike Bobinski, who has been in charge of Xavier’s athletic department for 12 years, was named Georgia Tech’s athletic director. Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson said Bobinski will be introduced at a news conference on the Georgia Tech campus today and will begin his new job on April 1. Bobinski is a 1979 Notre Dame graduate, where he played baseball for four years. He was Akron’s athletic director from 1994 to 1998 and was the associate athletic director at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1989 to 1994. Bobinski was hired as athletic director at Xavier in 1998. In 2004, he was named associate vice president for development and was in charge of the university’s fundraising efforts. He returned as athletic director in 2006. Peterson said Bobinski’s background in fundraising made him an especially attractive candidate.
