Aeros top B-Mets, 3-2
The Aeros increased their season-high winning streak to six games and raised their Eastern League-leading record to 15-6 with a 3-2 win over visiting Binghamton Monday night at Canal Park.
The Aeros snapped a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning when DH Chun Chen led off with a single and LF Nick Weglarz followed with a walk. After Ben Copeland came on to pinch run, 2B Ryan Rohlinger followed with an RBI single to score Chen. A throwing error by Binghamton 3B Jefry Marte also allowed Copeland to score, as the Aeros took a two-run lead.
Akron needed both runs, as Binghamton threatened to tie the game again in the bottom of the inning. Aeros RHP Rob Bryson, who quickly got the first two outs of the ninth, ran into trouble when RF Juan Lagares, C Juan Centeno and 1B Travis Ozaga each reached on consecutive singles.
Ozaga’s RBI scored Lagares, but Centeno was left stranded at third base when Bryson got pinch hitter Rafael Fernandez to strike out to end the threat and the game. Bryson (2-0, 3.18 ERA) scattered three hits and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings to earn the win.
Three Aeros batters finished with multiple hits, as Rohlinger went 3-for-4, Chen went 2-for-4 and RF Thomas Neal went 2-for-3.
Aeros starter Steven Wright (2-1, 1.45 ERA) allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings and struck out five.
Next up for the Aeros is the second game of this four game series tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Canal Park. Akron LHP T.J. House (2-0, 1.44 ERA at High-A Carolina) is slated to face Binghamton RHP Greg Peavy (2-1, 7.56 ERA).
NOTES: Wright entered Monday’s game with the third-best ERA (1.46) in the league…Binghamton 2B Josh Rodriguez was drafted by the Indians and played with the Aeros for full seasons in 2008 and 2009 and the beginning of 2010.
