Zips basketball: Where does Dambrot go?

By George Thomas Published: January 15, 2013

Small forward Chauncey Gilliam could be seen participating in a light practice with his teammates Tuesday morning.

Gilliam underwent minor left knee surgery and is ready to go.

“We’re not sure how ready he is,” coach Keith Dambrot said.

Still his return presents Dambrot with a dilemma.   Who starts?  In Gilliam’s absence, junior Nick Harney has filled his spot in the starting lineup.  In fact, he’s blossomed as a starter in the last four games averaging 14.8 points and 4.8 rebounds as the Zips have racked up seven consecutive victories.   Without a doubt it’s a good problem for Dambrot to have.

“I haven't decided,” he said when asked who would start against Ball State tonight. “It’s hard to take Harney out of the starting lineup though, not with what he's done. It wouldn't be fair to him.”

It’s a tightrope he’ll have to walk, but Harney’s not only scored, but he’s stepped up his defense as well, Dambrot admits.

Gilliam (7.3 points per game) on the other hand is more effective when he's in the starting role and can be deadly from outside, something the Zips need.

“You just play the best guys.   That's what you do.  That's what I've always done,” he said.
