Olga Shkundina of the University of Akron defeated Bowling Green’s Maddie Eccleston 6-2, 6-2 to join teammates Zara Harutyunyan and Prang Pantusart in the main draw at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Ohio State.
Also moving deeper in the tournament was the Zips doubles team of twin sisters Angelika and Angelina Jogasuria.
The winners of the singles and doubles events qualify for the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6 in Flushing, N.Y.
The Zips women’s team defeated Duquesne 124-89 Saturday afternoon at Ocasek Natatorium.
Becca Zimmer won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:36.22) with Meghan Bowling second. Zimmer and Bowling also went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle. Meg Finnerty won the 200 freestyle (1:54.51) and the 100 freestyle (52.71)
The Zips swept the 50 freestyle led by Jessica Ickes (24.72), followed by Taylor Hart and Kendra Colby. Catherine Carr was first in the 200 individual medley and second in the 200 butterfly and Kelsea Cross won the 200 breaststroke.
Cross, Colby, Carr and Ickes won the 200 medley relay and Carla McNamara won the 1-meter diving and Leanna Hoover, the 3-meter diving.
Kent State fell at Northern Illinois 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 in a MAC match. The Golden Flashes (8-16, 1-8) have lost four matches in a row.
Maigan Larsen led Kent with seven kills, Kathy Krupa had two blocks, Alexsandra Nowak and Jenny Buczek had 13 and 12 assists, respectively, and Bridget Grdina had 11 digs.
Despite Debbie Bell scoring two goals and Carla Johl one, Kent State (4-12, 4-4) lost to host Ball State 4-3 in overtime Saturday. The Flashes play at 1 p.m. today at Miami.
