UA women defeated as
top-scoring player is out

The University of Akron women's basketball team trimmed a 21-point second-half deficit to nine but couldn't get any closer in a 76-62 loss Sunday to visiting Marist College.

Freshman Keyla Snowden led UA with 17 points. Freshman Kara Murphy (St. Vincent-St. Mary) followed with 11.

The game had several big runs, including Marist's 16-2 spurt to open the game, forcing UA to play from behind all afternoon.

The Zips (5-8) were playing without leading scorer Sarah Tokodi for the first time this year. She injured her knee in Friday's loss to Xavier and is out indefinitely.

''It was our first game without Sarah, and it's going to take some time for us to find our identity,'' UA coach Jodi Kest said.

The Red Foxes (12-2) got 16 points and 13 rebounds from Meg Dahlman. Marist received 11 votes for the top 25 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division I coaches poll.

UA will conclude its five-game home stand Saturday when Saint Joseph's comes to Rhodes Arena. Tip time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
