KSU will induct 9 into hall of fame

Varsity 'K' ceremonies at school to be Feb. 8-9

Beacon Journal staff report

Kent State will induct eight former athletes and an administrator into its Varsity ''K'' Athletics Hall of Fame in ceremonies at the university Feb. 8 and 9.

Members of the 30th Varsity ''K'' class are Al Cariss (baseball, 1967-69); former Kent State President Carol Cartwright; Jeff Datkuliak (wrestling, 1989-91); Jan Dowling (women's golf, 1999-2002); Brendon Falconer (men's track, 1994-98); Brian Hallett (football, 1998-2001/men's track, 1999-2003); Trevor Huffman (men's basketball, 1998-2002); Helen (Jerdan) Knull (field hockey, 1999-2002); and John Van Benschoten (baseball, 1999-2001).

Rollie Geiger (Distinguished Alumnus award) and William Barrett (honorary Varsity ''K'') will receive special recognition.

Datkuliak, a Louisville High graduate, was a three-time Mid-American Conference champion — one of only seven KSU wrestlers to accomplish the feat — at 285 pounds. He led the Flashes to MAC titles in 1989 and 1990 and finished with a record of 70-24-3.

Hallett, of Norton, was a first-team All-MAC selection and a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American whose school records in the indoor and outdoor shot put still stand. He was a six-time MAC champion.

The induction ceremony will be 6 p.m. Feb. 8 in the Kent State Student Center Ballroom. On Feb. 9, the class will be honored at halftime of the men's basketball game against Northern Illinois, which tips off at 2 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.

Tickets for the induction ceremony are $50; $275 for a table of six; and $375 for a table of eight. For information, call Alicia Gaffney at 330-672-8399.

Malone HOF adds 6

The Malone College Athletics Hall of Fame grew by six with the addition of five athletes and an administrator in ceremonies Jan. 18 and 19.

Members of the induction class were Dale Baker (1978, wrestling); Mark Bankert (administrator); Heidi (Bennett) Yokom (1996, softball); Jason Carver (1996, basketball); Dan DeGeorge (1997, football); and Rob Roberts (1996, baseball).

Baker, from Southeast High, was a two-time NAIA District 22 wrestling champion and Malone's only four-time Mid-Ohio Conference champion.

Bankert, from Sandy Valley High, is in his 21st year at Malone. He is associate athletic director and sports information director.

DeGeorge, a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High in Akron, started all 41 games at running back during his college career. He was a three-year captain, four-time Offensive Back of the Year and two-time Offensive Player of the Year. He was Malone's first 1,000-yard rusher in a season and still holds numerous school records, including career rushing yards (3,111), rushing touchdowns (32), total touchdowns (39), 100-yard rushing games (14) and longest run from scrimmage (78 yards against Findlay in the 1995 NAIA playoffs).

Tickets for UA

Tickets remain for the University of Akron's Varsity A Sports Hall of Fame.

Ceremonies will be Friday in Ballroom A of the Student Center.

Inductees are Paul Donatelli (track), Clarence Kelly (football), Ken Lolla (soccer), Steve Sada (baseball), Andrea Beans Sales (track) and Roderick Scott (soccer). Sue Larson will receive the Kenneth ''Red'' Cochrane Meritorious Service Award, and her husband, Robert A. Larson, will receive the Mike Krino Varsity A Achievement Award.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $17.50 for children 12 and younger.

For information, call Ken MacDonald at 330-699-5272.
