As the University of Akron plays its final game in the Rubber Bowl, some former Zips and their opponents recall their favorite moments:
Quarterback Charlie Frye
Frye's best memory came from 2004, a 31-28 upset of Marshall in front of 29,621 fans and a national audience on ESPN2. Frye rallied the Zips from a 21-point deficit and tied the score with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jason Montgomery with 45 seconds left, and kicker Jason Swiger hit a 43-yard field goal as time expired for the victory.
''It was our first national-TV game, the biggest crowd they'd ever seen at the Rubber Bowl,'' Frye said. ''Every time they send out recruiting [brochures], the picture is that game. Guys still talk about that; it was an ESPN Classic.
''Everyone rushed the field. After the game I saw all my high school friends at the 50-yard line. It was something else.''
Offensive lineman
Andy Alleman
Alleman recalled two triumphs from his junior year in 2005, one an overtime victory over longtime nemesis Northern Illinois and the Thanks-giving Day ''Snow Bowl'' game against Kent State played in a blizzard.
''We were wearing throwback uniforms,'' Alleman said. ''When you went back and looked at the tape, it looked like a '50s game. Going into the game you have a mindset of what you're used to, then you go outside and it's a blizzard. That throws you off. You felt like a little kid, you forgot all your anxiety and nervousness.
''It was a crazy atmosphere and we ended up being MAC East champs.''
Quarterback
Joshua Cribbs,
Kent State
Cribbs recalled a thrilling shootout with Frye in 2003. Kent State scored 17 points in the final six minutes to win 41-38 before a crowd of 26,814 and take the lead in the race for the MAC title. Sophomore Travis Mayle hit a 40-yard field goal as time expired for the Golden Flashes.
Frye completed 36-of-46 passes for 407 yards and three touchdowns, setting school records for yards and completions. Cribbs, a junior, completed 25-of-43 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, all career bests. He also rushed 15 times for 57 yards.
''I remember Frye was crying, 'Good game, Cribbs,' '' Cribbs said. ''I'll never forget that because it was at their home. It was when they got their new turf. I think they had to push the game back a little bit because they weren't finished putting it down.
''I remember I threw for my career high in passing yards, and he threw for a little bit more than me. But we were able to score a few more times.''
