Michael Green, a junior center from Dublin Coffman High School, has orally committed to continue his academic and basketball career at the University of Akron.
Coffman assistant coach Jamie Pearson confirmed that Green called Zips coach Keith Dambrot on Monday night to accept a scholarship.
By NCAA rules, Dambrot cannot comment on Green until after he signs an NCAA letter of intent in November.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pound Green averaged 15 points and nine rebounds last season in leading the Shamrocks to a 20-4 record and a berth in a Division I Columbus district final.
Coffman won the Ohio Capital Conference title and he was first-team all-conference.
As a sophomore, Green averaged 12 points and eight rebounds.
Recruiting Web site Rivals.com does not assign him a star rating, but does list other schools interested as St. Joseph's, Penn State, St. Louis, West Point, Annapolis, and the Air Force Academy.
With 2010 seniors Jimmy Conyers and Chris McKnight leaving, the Zips have one scholarship left to offer.

Reminds me a lot of the St-v/St-M player who just signed to Wyoming, but was not offered by Akron. I can't figure this out, as he doesn't seem to be on the scale that Akron is recruing lately, Payne, Paine, Weatherspoon... And I can't see where he fits in with limited scholarships. Time will tell.
FEAR THE ' ROO. . . .
let's hope this greene kid can play. From what i hear he has more talent thatn the StVStm player u speak of.
Akron would recruit the kids in the area if they had the talent...trust me, Dambrot and Brookhart would love nothing more than getting a kid in the area.
University of Akron athletics have nowhere to go but UP. With Akron's appearance in the NCAA tournament they're going to start attracting more talent. And with the recent renovations the University has undergone (since May of 2000 when I graduated and enlisted) the other programs, especially the football program are going to explode! I hope Brookhart realizes what he has and takes full advantage of this huge opportunity to recruit top talent. With the facilities Akron now has I honestly believe they'll be able to start pulling some recruits away from the larger programs, Ohio State included. One can only pray that I am right. GO ZIPS!!!
