Beacon Journal staff report
The No. 7-seeded University of Akron's season ended Saturday with a 4-2 loss in eight innings to Western Michigan in the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Firestone Stadium.
No. 4 seed Miami (Ohio) then defeated No. 3 WMU 1-0 in the tournament title game to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in program history.
UA (35-24) won three games Friday before falling in Saturday's semifinal elimination game. The Zips' three tournament wins are a school record. UA's 35 wins tied for the most victories for the program since 1998 and are the second-most since entering the MAC in 1993.
In the title game, RedHawks junior Sarah Billstrom hit a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, and freshman Jessica Simpson pitched her second consecutive shutout.
Simpson, a 2008 North Canton Hoover graduate, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. She helped Hoover to win Division I state titles in 2006 and 2008.
Simpson struck out six Saturday and allowed just two hits. She finished the tournament with a 4-0 record and a 0.50 ERA, and is now 23-11.
Seniors Lisa McLean (Perry), Julie Boyes (Lake) and Amber Lowe (Carrollton) have concluded their UA careers.
McLean led the team with a .341 batting average and also had 21 RBI. Junior Krista Hansen (.331), Lowe (.312), Boyes (.311) and sophomore Heather Bauer (Highland, .306) were each consistent at bat for UA.
Boyes led the team in home runs (nine) and RBI (30).
Freshman Andrea Arney (Dalton, 17-17, 2.58 ERA, 228 innings) and Bauer (18-7, 1.80 ERA, 1631/3 innings) were the Zips' top two pitchers.
Miami (32-22) will find out its seeding for the NCAA Tournament when the bracket is revealed at 10 tonight on ESPNU.
