• University of Akron junior Anthony Ampaipitakwong was named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week. Ampaipitakwong, a candidate for the prestigious Hermann Trophy, scored two goals, including the game-winner, to complete a perfect regular season for the Zips (18-0).
The native of Carrollton, Texas, has started all 18 games for UA and recorded five goals and four assists.
• University of Akron junior Blair Gavin was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Week for men's soccer. He had a hand in both game-winning goals last week.
The midfielder from Louisville, Ky., converted a penalty kick to defeat Michigan State on Wednesday before assisting on the go-ahead score against Hartwick on Saturday.
• University of Akron senior Miguel Graham was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Zips' 28-20 win over Kent State. The senior from Rock Hill, S.C., had six tackles, including five solo stops, with a school-record six pass breakups.

Can anyone explain how the Beacon's coverage of the #1 soccer team in THE COUNTRY could be so poor? The Akron Zips finish the regular season undefeated and get a small article on page 10. It's no wonder the paper is dying a slow but sure death.
