Anthony ''Humpty'' Hitchens saved the University of Akron basketball team from an 0-3 start to the 2009-10 season.
Hitchens, a sophomore guard, scored all 17 of his points in the second half Saturday afternoon to lead the Zips to a 63-59 victory over Drake in the third round of the Glenn Wilkes Classic at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
UA (1-2), which had been beaten by Austin Peay and North Carolina State in the tournament's first two games, trailed 33-27 at halftime and 42-33 with 16 minutes left.
Hitchens led the comeback, hitting four 3-pointers, two other baskets and one free throw in the second half. He also was one of the Zips' defensive leaders, holding the Bulldogs' Ryan Wedel in check in the final 20 minutes.
''I was taking good shots and they were falling,'' the 5-foot-9 Hitchens said. ''I had my mind focused. I am tired of losing. I thought we should have beaten Austin Peay.''
Drake (1-3), a member of the Missouri Valley Conference, had that 42-33 lead when the Zips went on a 9-0 run to tie the score, with Hitchens capping it with a 3-pointer.
Four ties followed that, but Drake pulled ahead 58-57 with 2:22 left. On the ensuing UA possession at the 2:08 mark, Hitchens hit a 3-pointer to make it 60-58.
Drake missed its next shot and junior guard Darryl Roberts hit a midrange jump shot for a 62-58 lead for UA, with Hitchens getting an assist on the basket. The Bulldogs' Dave Smith hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 62-59 and Roberts clinched it with a free throw with 13.6 seconds remaining.
''We played with much more effort,'' UA coach Keith Dambrot said. ''We were fortunate to come out with a win. But it reminded me of the old Zips. We had fight when it mattered.''
Sophomore Brett McClanahan was the only other UA player in double figures, hitting four 3-pointers for 12 points. Wedel had 14 for Drake, but was not a factor down the stretch.
The Zips conclude the tournament at 11 a.m. today against Howard.
UA then has two home games, meeting Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday and Niagara on Nov. 29.
