Zips coach Ianello adds quarterback guru in Powlus

By Tom Gaffney
Beacon Journal sports writer

University of Akron quarterbacks Matt Rodgers and Patrick Nicely will have the opportunity to work with one of the best passers in Notre Dame history.

Ron Powlus, a former standout for the Irish, has joined the Zips coaching staff as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, Zips coach Rob Ianello announced today.

Ianello also named Charlie Camp, who played for him when he was an assistant at Arizona, as linebackers coach.

''Having worked with Ron at Notre Dame and seeing Charlie grow from a player to a coach, I have great confidence in both these coaches,'' Ianello said in a prepared statement. ''They will be key components in building the type program of which we all can be proud.''

Powlus was the director of personnel development for Notre Dame in 2005 and 2006, before joining the coaching staff in 2007 as quarterbacks coach.

Powlus started for four years as the Notre Dame quarterback and set 20 school records. He started all 46 games of his career and completed 558-of-969 passes for 7,602 yards and 52 touchdowns.

He will be working closely with Rodgers, who started three games before suffering a season-ending knee injury, and Nicely, who started the final seven games.

Ianello hopes Powlus can develop Rodgers and Nicely the same way he did with Jimmy Clausen, the record-setting Notre Dame quarterback the past three years.

''I have seen first-hand Ron's development as a coach and the work he did with Jimmy Clausen,'' said Ianello, who was on the Notre Dame staff from 2005 to 2009. ''He is a rising star in our profession and I am elated he will be a part of our staff.''

Camp was a four-year starter at linebacker in the early-to-mid-1990s for Arizona, where Ianello was an assistant for two of those years.

Camp was linebackers coach at North Dakota State University in 2009.

He also has been an assistant at Nevada, San Jose State, Oregon State, Arizona, Idaho and San Diego State.

''Charlie was one of the first coaches I called when I got this job,'' Ianello said. 'He is passionate, committed and I know his players will love playing for him.''

Camp has a strong group of UA linebackers to work with, including Freshman All-American Brian Wagner and Mike Thomas.

Powlus = Guru ?
Powlus = standout QB?

I don't think so. This is a friend taking care of friends.

How do you compete with big schools like Ohio State?

@William - How does Canal Park compete with Progressive Field? There, that's two dumb questions.

TomDaSpeechFixr (aka. classic negative Akron dinasour) Here's hoping you'll eventually eat those words. That is if you are man enough!

Being man enough and stating the obvious truth about Ron Powlus are two different things, big guy. I really hope he does well but it's all just talk at this point. I think hyping him up is just pointless.

All I know is, Clausen was one of the top 5 QBs in the country, and if Powlus had anything to do with it, he's gotta be better than whoever's been tutoring our QBs since Frye graduated. I mean, we've seen some poooooor quarterback play, man. And at this level, in this conference, the play of the QB means EVERYTHING.

Nicely seems promising. He could be huge for us in the future.

If Ianello is the recruiting genius everyone is touting him to be, Powlus will be focusing his time on somebody other than Rodgers or Nicely.

Too many people in Akron aren't happy unless they're complaining. Powlus was a good college QB. He did not have a stellar pro career, but doesn't mean he's not an effective coach. If his work with Clausen is any indication, he's a good hire.

I think that Ianello should find a position on the staff for Jerry Faust. What the hell is a matter with Faust? Look him up, Ianello . . . . he lives somewhere around Akron
