Kent State’s Wad Phaewchimplee shot a 3-under-par 69 to claim a share of the lead through one round at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate Classic in South Carolina.
As a team, the Golden Flashes are tied with Jacksonville State and St. John’s for second place with a team score of 292 (+4). Troy holds the lead after one day.
Jennifer Ha (+1) also shot an impressive round, and sits in a tie for 14th place. Natalie Goodson (+2), Josee Dovon (+4) and Erin Hawe (+4) rounded out the Kent State lineup.
• Kent State scored at least one run in each of the first three innings en route to a 6-5 lead at Middle Tennessee State.
The Golden Flashes (7-3) were led offensively in a three-hit performance by T.J. Sutton. Sutton collected three singles and an RBI in the victory.
Tommy Monnot and Zach Beckner each added two hits. Alex Miklos doubled, scored a run and drove in the would-be game winning RBI with a walk in the eighth inning.
• The University of Akron split a doubleheader against Delaware State in Dover on Sunday. Akron (4-5) dropped the first game 13-1 before beating Delaware State (5-2) in the second game, 11-10.
In game one, Brian Lees and Daulton Mosbarger led the team at the plate with a pair of hits, including a double for each player.
In game two, the Zips scored seven runs in the top of the seventh inning to grab an 11-10 lead. Lees again had a strong game as he collected three hits and recorded two RBI. Dom Iero had six RBI including a grand slam.
