Malone University senior cross country runner Tina Oprean (Canton Central Catholic) became the school’s first-ever NCAA All-American in any sport after finishing 38th (out of 244 runners) at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships in Spokane, Washington, Saturday. She finished the Plantes Ferry Sports Complex with a time of 21.47.9.
Oprean qualified as an individual for the NCAA national event after placing third overall at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships in Kenosha, Wisconsin, two weeks ago.
Malone is in its first full year as a member of NCAA Division II.
Walsh junior defensive back Jamaris Brown became the first Walsh University player to receive first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference accolades. An honorable mention last year, Brown was the only Cavalier to be selected to the first or second teams.
Linebackers Cory Farcas and Cameron Trudell and defensive end Andrew Roy (Tallmadge), along with offensive players Aaron Male (Ellet), Zach Conlan and Kevin Pask (Cuyahoga Falls) all received honorable mentions.
